MANILA, Philippines—Mayor Alfredo Lim has ordered the suspension of afternoon classes from elementary to high school in Manila Wednesday due to the strong winds and rain showers brought about by Tropical Storm Gener.

This however, covers only public schools, Lim said in his twitter post.

“I order afternoon classes from elementary to high school in PUBLIC schools suspended,” it said.

Meanwhile, in a radio interview, Lim said classes in the college level are likewise ordered suspended, but added that morning classes will continue until dismissed by their instructors.

As for those asking why morning classes weren’t suspended in Manila while neighboring cities already have, Lim said in his twitter post that it wasn’t raining hard in the city earlier Monday that’s why he didn’t call for class suspension.

“Nakakahinayang yung oras at araw na hindi pagpasok ng mga estudyante (It’s such a waste if students won’t come to their classes),” he said, but added that following reports of areas that were flooded due to the bad weather, “nagdesisyon na din ako na isuspinde na ang klase ng mga estudyante (I decided eventually to suspend classes),” he said.

Similar announcement for private schools were left to the discretion of its administrators.
