ARMED with citation tickets and accompanied by local officials, about 24 Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts patrolled barangay Ibabao-Estancia in Mandaue City for litter bugs yesterday.
The scouts of Mandaue City National High School met with 10 eco-wardens, tanods and police personnel to be briefed on their tasks.
Ibabao-Estancia barangay captain Jun del Mar said the school willingly offered the scouts for training to help keep city streets clean and to protect the environment.
The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts were stationed at S.B Cabahug street in Ibabao.
Three hours on the job, the scouts managed to catch 150 violators of the city’s solid waste management law.
They were supervised by del Mar and Ricardo Mendoza, officer-in-charge of the city’s barangay waste management program.
Mendoza said those who spit, defecate, urinate and dispose of cigarette butts, plastics and all garbage will be issued tickets.
He said the violators were unaware of the city law and were let go with reminders not to repeat the violations.
A violator may be issued a citation ticket which carries a P200 to P5,000 fine.
Mendoza said they hope to expand the program to other barangays.
