MANILA, Philippines – Former Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office general manager and vice chairperson Rosario Uriarte asked senators on Thursday to exclude her from interrogations by members of the blue ribbon committee in connection with the disbursement of intelligence funds during the Arroyo administration.
An emotional Uriarte cited the stress, which her previous appearance has been causing her parents and children, as well as the plunder case already slapped against her and former president and Pampanga Representative Gloria Arroyo as her reasons.
“I would already like to invoke my right against self-incrimination, your honors, please understand that plunder is a non-bailable offense,” said Uriarte, her voice shaking.
While Senator Franklin Drilon recognized Uriarte’s situation, he said the Senate’s questioning of the former official must continue.
“Certainly you have the right to remain silent…but I believe we have to continue this hearing in the public interest…Anyway, you are assisted by counsel,” Drilon said.
The questioning went on during the Senate committee hearing on Thursday morning.
She has also been ordered by the committee to submit certifications of her bank accounts and statements of assets, liabilities and net worth.
