MANILA, PHILIPPINES—A 23-year-old cook was gunned down by a still unidentified suspect in Manila before dawn Monday, police said.

Senior Police Officer 1 Charles Duran of Manila Police District’s homicide department said Gerald Gutierrez, cook at Bonchon Chicken Restaurant, was waiting for a ride with his co-employee along Taft Avenue in front of Manila City Hall at around 3:35 a.m., when the unidentified gunman shot Gutierrez at the back of his head.

Duran said Gutierrez was rushed to Gat San Andres Hospital but was declared dead at 4:45 a.m. by his attending surgeon. The victim sustained a gunshot wound in the back part of the left side of his head.

“Several persons were interviewed at the scene, but no one could give any details about the suspect,” Duran said.

He said further investigation is now underway to determine the motive behind the attack, and for the possible identification and arrest of the suspect.
