CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines—About 1,250 people were forced to flee their homes in several areas of Camiguin due to flash floods caused by heavy rains spawned by a low pressure area off eastern Visayas since Thursday.
As of Friday, the evacuees are still in evacuation centers, according to a report by the Northern Mindanao Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) based here.
“The affected families from the municipalities that have been flooded have been evacuated,” the NMDRRMC said.
The affected areas were in the towns of Mahinog, Catarman and Sagay.
The floods also rendered the Alangilan Bridge in Sagay impassable.
In a statement, Camiguin Governor Jurdin Romualdo said he had ordered the suspension of classes in the affected areas since Thursday but ferry boat service to the province from the Balingoan Port in Misamis Oriental had not been cancelled.
No state of calamity has been declared yet because the provincial risk reduction management council was still assessing the damage, he said.
