Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police on Thursday said that its security detail assigned to former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is not meant to restrict her movements.

Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr., PNP spokesman, said its Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG) is keeping an eye on Arroyo to ensure her safety.

“More or less the security given to her is a sign of respect for being a former head of state,” Cerbo told reporters.

He said that just like any other personalities released from jail through a court order, Arroyo “is free to go anywhere.”

Cerbo also said that policemen were outnumbered Wednesday by protesters who tried to block Arroyo’s convoy because  other officers have been fielded to various strategic areas. Jamie Marie Elona
