Woman shot dead
After rejecting a suitor, a female security guard was shot dead as she was walking home in Quezon City on Tuesday night. Case investigator PO1 Rhic Pittong identified the victim as Jennifer Ternate, who worked for an Avon outlet on Quirino Highway corner Jordan Plains in Novaliches, Quezon City. The victim died immediately after she was shot in the back of the head around 9 p.m. in front of a hotel by a man who came up from behind her. Pittong learned from the woman’s coworkers that the victim’s suitor usually picked her up at her place of work to walk her home. But on Tuesday night, no one came for Ternate as she told her coworkers that she had turned down her suitor who has yet to be identified by the police. Julie M. Aurelio

The case of a barangay chair who was killed last month and that of his barangay councilor who was shot dead on Tuesday are related to each other and may be due to a political dispute, a police official said yesterday. Senior Insp. Joselito de Ocampo, chief of the Manila Police District homicide section, said they were still waiting for witnesses in the killing of Amir Casan, a councilor of Barangay 384. “What we have at the moment is circumstantial evidence that the deaths were related and the motive was political,” he said. Casan was killed by two still unidentified suspects in front of his office on Tuesday morning while talking to another barangay worker. On the other hand, Sainal Sharief, the chair of the same barangay, was gunned down by two men inside his house last month. The police said that the victims both ran for barangay chair in the last elections but Casan lost. Nancy C. Carvajal
