MANILA, Philippines—An official of the National Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday confirmed that they had arrested one of the candidates for the Chief Justice position for a tax-evasion case.

NBI Deputy Director Ruel Lasala told reporters that lawyer Vicente Velasquez was arrested Wednesday because of a standing warrant of arrest issued by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.

Lasala said the Criminal Intelligence Division served the arrest warrant on Velasquez, who immediately posted bail.

Velasquez is one of two candidates disqualified by the Judicial and Bar Council after he failed to comply with the documentary requirements. Representative Rufus Rodriguez was also disqualified, likewise for failure to submit the required documents.
