Dagupan City, Pangasinan, Philippines—Police on Tuesday said the collection of jai alai bets in Pangasinan had stopped and authorities were conducting continuous operations to ensure this would not be revived.
Senior Supt. Rosueto Ricaforte, provincial police director, said he had received a directive from the Philippine National Police headquarters ordering them to make sure that collecting bets for jai alai games was stopped in their areas.
Police said their information showed that permits for jai alai bet collection had been issued in 31 towns and three cities in the province.
On Monday, police raided a suspected gambling den in Barangay Sagud-Bahley in San Fabian and arrested two “jueteng” cabo (head of bet collectors). Jueteng is an illegal numbers racket.
Chief Insp. Domingo Soriano, San Fabian police chief, said his men seized 25 bundles of paper with the phrase “jai alai original” stamped on them and on which number pairs similar to jueteng combinations were written from two San Fabian residents.
