Road accident kills 13 villagers in northern India

LUCKNOW, India – Police said a truck burst a tire and plowed through a group of villagers in northern India, killing 13 people and seriously injuring three others.

Police officer Manoj Chauhan said the driver lost control of the vehicle and was among the injured.

Chauhan said the accident occurred Saturday night as the villagers were returning from their farms in Etawah, a town 250 kilometers (155 miles) southwest of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state. The injured have been hospitalized.

India has the world’s deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed every year. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
