1 dead, 1 missing in Calabarzon amid bad weather

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Philippines—One person drowned and another was missing in Laguna and Rizal provinces on Saturday as heavy rains wrought by Tropical depression “Ferdie” battered the Calabarzon (Calamba, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) region.

In Laguna, members of the Provincial disaster risk reduction management council recovered the body of Jonathan Sagodaquiel, 31, at around 8 a.m. Saturday following an overnight search and rescue operation.

Sagodaquiel was reportedly drunk when he crossed the Lumban river in Barangay Wawa at around 5 p.m. on Friday, according to Regional DRRMC director Vicente Tomazar.

His body was found several kilometers from where he was last seen, said Tomazar.

In Rizal, Junrel Tamario, 20, remained missing after he was swept away by a strong current in a creek in Barangay San Andres of Cainta town.

Tomazar said neighbors saw Tamario fishing at the creek on Saturday morning before he fell into the water. As of Saturday afternoon, authorities in Cainta were still trying to locate Tamario, he said.

In Antipolo City, a road along Barangay Mayamot was closed to traffic after flood water rose to “knee high” at around 2 p.m.

In San Mateo town in Rizal, Tomazar said eight families were evacuated from their homes in Barangay Banaba after the water level in San Mateo River rose above its normal level.
