The baby’s chinky eyes and fair skin is similar to her son’s, said a woman who rushed to look at the infant after hearing in the news about a newborn baby found in a trash bin along General Maxilom Avenue, Cebu City on Thursday’ dawn.
The woman hurried to barangay officials to verify.
Could this be her grandson born out of wedlock?
“My husband told me to go and check the baby. He has work and couldn’t come and so does my son,” the woman told Cebu Daily News.
She requested anonymity to avoid trouble with the family of her son’s girlfriend, whom she believes is the mother of the abandoned baby.
She said the family noticed that the pregnant girlfriend’s belly was suddenly “flattened.”
“She told my son the baby was eaten by a monster (“ungo”). Of course we didn’t believe her,” she said.
The hospital social worker led the woman to the nursery of the Cebu City Medical Center where the baby is confined.
She had no baby photo of her son with her to compare. The picture was destroyed during a recent urban flood.
“Even if my son and his girlfriend did not get married, we welcomed her pregnancy. We even prepared baby garments,” said the woman crying.
The infant will be placed under temporary custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7 which will try to establish the baby’s identity.
The hospital social worker told CDN that DSWD-7 will meet the alleged parents of the child.
Dr. Catherine Echevarre, attending physician, said the baby is in normal condition.
“If the baby had been found later, he could have died from suffocation,” Echevarre said.
