THE LA SALLE Green Archers took the momentary lead in the standings in the 75th UAAP basketball tournament after they repulsed the hard-fighting University of the East Red Warriors, 67-59, last Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Jeron Teng once again delivered the goods as he scored 16 points, including five crucial one in the fourth that deadened an uprising by the Red Warriors. La Salle bagged its second win in as many games.
Teng, La Salle’s prized recruit from Xavier School, scored on a layup and a three-point play that turned a precarious 51-50 lead into a six-point cushion.
La Salle scored four more points that capped off a 10-0 run that led to a 61-50 lead, virtually sealing the game.
La Salle also got plenty of support from Jovet Mendoza and LA Revilla, who each had 11 markers.
Roi Sumang paced UE with 20 points but the Red Lions fell to 0-2 (win-loss) for the season.
They try to rebound today when they tackle the Adamson Soaring Falcons at 2 p.m. in the opener of a twinbill at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Meanwhile at 4 p.m., the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers will aim to follow up on their momentous 71-70 win over the reigning four-time champions Ateneo the other day when they face off against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, who are expected to welcome back Cameroonian import Alinko Mbah./Correspondent Jonas Panerio
