TACLOBAN CITY, LEYTE, Philippines — Police in Eastern Visayas accounted for 32 firearms and an explosive device in 28 operations conducted across the region on Sept. 28 as part of intensified efforts to curb the possession and proliferation of loose firearms, the Police Regional Office 8 (PRO-8) said.

PRO-8 said one firearm was seized during a police operation, while 13 were voluntarily surrendered by individuals in the region.

Another 17 firearms had previously been deposited with the police for safekeeping, while one firearm was still in the process of being surrendered.

Brig. Gen. Romano Cardiño, PRO-8 director, urged people who possess unauthorized or unregistered firearms and explosives to coordinate with the nearest police unit for their proper disposition in accordance with the law.

“Responsible firearm ownership is important to the safety of our families and communities. By voluntarily surrendering these firearms, we can help prevent incidents and maintain safe communities,” Cardiño said.
