Martial Law abuses, impunity recalled at Bataan forum
BALANGA CITY, Bataan — Artist and novelist Levy Balgos dela Cruz spoke about the abuses of Martial Law and the continuing culture of impunity during an open forum in Balanga on Monday afternoon, Sept. 21.
Speaking in Filipino before about 50 young people, Dela Cruz said the culture of impunity “remains in our midst,” as Filipinos continue to suffer from poverty while billions of pesos are allegedly lost to government graft and corruption.
Dela Cruz questioned the government’s efforts to arrest and prosecute those implicated in the flood control scandal, asking, “For how long will they stay in jail?”

He also cited the acquittal of former first lady Imelda Marcos, which he said raised questions about accountability.
Dela Cruz urged the audience not to be afraid to speak out against abuses.
“We must have the courage to speak up against the evils of Martial Law,” he said. /mcm
