Mandaue intensifies anti-rabies campaign

/ 07:12 AM July 16, 2012

OVER a thousand dogs in barangay Subangdako have been vaccinated by the City Veterinarian Office as part of  their ongoing thrust to eradicate rabies incidence in Mandaue City.

Barangay Subangdako is one of the 27 barangays the City Veterinary Office is prioritizing to achieve a rabies-free Mandaue.

“Dogs need to be vaccinated once each year. Some dog owners believe that once their pet has been vaccinated it no longer needs another vaccination. That’s wrong,” said Dr. Karen Sanchez, Mandaue City Veterinarian.

She added, that if somebody is bitten by a vaccinated dog, that person should still be treated with anti-rabies medicine.  “It doesn’t mean that if a dog was already vaccinated it is already 100 percent rabies free,” added Sanchez.

Sanchez said Mandaue City is the only place in the country which has barangay rabies coordinators. /Norman V. Mendoza, Correspondent
