MANILA, Philippines—One person was killed and two others were wounded in what officials believed was an election- related strafing incident early Monday in Maluso town, Basilan, the military said.
A motorized boat owned by village captain Mohammad Nordani of Canas village, loaded with 400 passengers from Zamboanga City and on its way to Tabuan Lasa in Basilan “was sprayed with bullets” by four unidentified men aboard two yellow motorized pump boats, Colonel Ramon Yogyog, commander of the Special Operations Task Force Basilan, said.
The suspects were armed with M16 and M14 rifles, Yogyog added.
The incident, which occurred around 1 a.m., resulted in the death of Nurhiba Ahamad, 46, resident of Suligan Bubuan, and the wounding of Hadja Patricia Kadil, 46, of Lanawan proper; and Awina Ahamad, 35, of Suligan Bubuan Island in the municipality of Tabuan Lasa.
Police reports said the passengers were supposed to register at the municipality of Tabuan Lasa.
