/ 07:33 AM July 11, 2011

UNKNOWN  Filipino boxer Roilo Golez won the Asian Boxing Council minimumweight title with a 10th round technical knockout win over hometown boy Thongthailek Sor Tanapinyo in Samut Sakhon, Thailand.

Golez, who hails from Maco, Compostela Valley Province, fights out of the Highland Boxing stable. He is promoted by Brico Santig and entered the bout with a record of 11 wins (4 KOs) and 6 losses.  Tanapinyo did not have a stellar record either with  16 wins (6 KOs) with 14 losses but was the defending champion with the homecourt advantage.

It was a keenly contested battle but Golez’ body attack spelled the difference as he knocked the Thai down twice and finished him at the 1:04 mark of the 10th.

Golez’ win comes less than two weeks after his stablemate Rey Lorito scored a major upset in Thailand by winning the PABA light flyweight title against Wisanu Kokietgym.

Tanapinyo fought in the Philippines in 2007 and lost by second round knockout to Donnie “Ahas” Nietes in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.  /correspondent Rene Bonsubre Jr.
