MAN SHOT, HURT IN TEJERO

A MAN was shot and wounded by a man after they argued over a basketball game in barangay Tejero, Cebu City.

Warren Fernandez, 25, was shot in the hip.

The suspect  Ecoy Villanueva fled after the shooting, said police.

Abelard Rafols, 36, sustained graze wounds in the hand and face after he was hit by a stray bullet which came from the gun fired by Villanue, said police.

The wounded persons were brought to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.

Police said Fernandez and Villanueva argued after a basketball game. Villanueva left after the argument but returned moments later and shot Fernandez./CORRESPONDENT CHITO O. ARAGON

EX-VILLAGE CHIEF SHOT IN WAKE

THE former barangay chairman of Sacsac in Dalaguete town, southern Cebu was shot and wounded while attending a wake at dawn yesterday.

Ademar Quilaton, 59, was shot in  the waist.  The assailant was identified as a certain Romulo, 20.

PO3 Christopher Requina, desk officer of the Dalaguete police, said  Quilaton was in a  vigil wake of a former councilor, when Romulo arrived an without a word shot the victim with a .45 caliber pistol.

Romulo fled after the shooting, said police.

Quilaton was taken to the Dalaguete District Hospital.

Police said political rivalry could be the motive in the attack./CORRESPONDENT GABRIEL C. BONJOC

VAN HITS TRAFFIC AIDE IN MANDAUE

A 38-YEAR-OLD traffic enforcer in Mandaue City was wounded after he was hit by a Starex van which was being chased for a traffic violation.

Noel Mendoza  of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team), was sitting on a parked motorcycle in barangay Centro when he was run down.  He was later  brought to the Mandaue City Hospital for treatment of body  bruises.

Police said the van driver intentionally rammed Mendoza to escape traffic enforcers who were chasing him for  a traffic violation.

The driver of the Starex van with plate number LNB-189 was not identified. The car’s registration was traced to Robert Yu, an owner of a KTV bar in Cebu City.

The van was stopped by Mendoza at M.C. Briones Highway corner A.S. Fortuna Street for disregarding traffic light signals past 7 p.m. last Friday.

Mendoza approached the driver who insisted that he did not violate  any traffic rules.

The driver then sped off. Mendoza and other enforcers chased the van which was  trapped at the corner of A.C. Cortes Avenue and S.B. Cabahug Street.

The van driver rammed a multicab in front of him and drove toward barangay Centro.

Trraffic enforcers went to Ouano Avenue in sitio Tribunal since there was  no other exit point.

Upon seeing the van, they tried to corner the vehicle but the van driver   did not stop and hit Mendoza before speeding off to Cebu City.

After the incident, the Team office received a call from someone who assured that the van owner would  pay for the damages. The caller did not identify himself./CORRESPONDENT NORMAN V. MENDOZA

FORMER INMATE SHOT DEAD

A MAN previously jailed for murder was shot dead in his house in barangay Liburon, Carcar City, southern Cebu.

Euguene Alicaba, 35, suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the head.

Alicaba was  watching TV at home on  Friday night when the attacked occured.

No one was able to see the assailant, said PO1 James Navio, desk officer of the Carcar City.

Police said personal grudges could be the motive in the killing.

The victim was released from jail last year, said police./CORRESPONDENT GABRIEL C. BONJOC
