Dog euthanized after hit-and-run in Tagbilaran

TAGBILARAN CITY — A dog was euthanized after suffering a severe spinal injury when a vehicle hit it along M. Espuelas Street here on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The incident occurred at 4:30 p.m. and was captured by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera, according to Bohol Animal Rescue and Kindness Inc. (BARK).

The dog, described by its owner as a beloved family pet, suffered a dislocated lumbar spine after a white vehicle struck it.

Despite efforts to treat the animal, its family eventually decided to have it euthanized because of the extent of its injuries.

BARK released information about the incident with the permission of the pet’s owner, former city councilor Atoy Torralba.

The animal welfare group called on the driver involved to come forward and provide information about the incident.

BARK also urged motorists to exercise greater caution, particularly in areas where animals may be crossing or roaming.

As a member of the City and Provincial Rabies Councils, BARK reminded the public of laws on animal protection and responsible pet ownership.

It cited Republic Act No. 8485, as amended by RA 10631, or the Animal Welfare Act, which protects animals from cruelty and requires their proper care.

The group also cited Republic Act No. 9482, or the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007, which requires dog owners to keep their pets under control and prevent them from roaming in streets and public places.

BARK appealed to pet owners to secure their animals and urged anyone with information about the white vehicle to contact the pet owner, authorities or the organization. /mcm
