MANILA, Philippines — Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong on Sunday called for an investigation into the attack on Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) interim Chief Minister Abdulraof “Sammy Gambar” Macacua and his companions.

The lawmaker made the call a day after Macacua and his companions survived a shooting when their convoy came under fire at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, in Barangay Dulangan, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte.

“We demand justice through a swift, thorough, and complete investigation of this reprehensible crime. Those responsible must be identified, apprehended, and brought to justice without delay,” Adiong said.

“The Bangsamoro people deserve nothing less than the full truth and unwavering accountability,” he added.

According to Adiong, the attack on the BARMM interim chief’s life also affects the Bangsamoro peace process, as it occurred barely one month before the region’s first parliamentary elections on Sept. 14, 2026.

“We therefore call on all parties to resolve every grievance through dialogue, democratic institutions, and the rule of law—not through the barrel of a gun,” he said.

“Let justice be swift and complete. And let nothing derail the Bangsamoro people’s historic journey toward lasting peace and genuine self-governance,” he added. /mcm
