Habagat to affect Luzon, parts of Visayas for 5 more days

MANILA, Philippines — The southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” will continue to affect Luzon and parts of Visayas in the next five days, the state weather bureau warned on Sunday.

In the 5 a.m. forecast, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather specialist Aldczar D. Aurelio said: “Based on our data and analysis, the effects of the southwest monsoon will continue to linger in Luzon and the western section of the Visayas for the next five days.”

Meantime, the monsoon is anticipated to bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms to Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Batanes, Cagayan, Zambales, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac and Occidental Mindoro on Sunday, Pagasa said.

State meteorologists further warned of 50 to 100 millimeters of rain in the next 24 hours in La Union, Pangasinan and Zambales.

Pagasa added that Metro Manila, Visayas and the rest of Luzon, also affected by the southwest monsoon, are expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

Mindanao, on the other hand, will have isolated rain showers, due to localized thunderstorms.

Pagasa is also monitoring a low-pressure area 2,335 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon, outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility, which is “unlikely to develop into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.” /apl
