TACLOBAN CITY — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck near Maydolong, Eastern Samar early Monday, Aug. 10.

The tremor was felt in varying intensities in parts of Eastern Samar, Samar, Northern Samar and Leyte, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The earthquake occurred at 1:05 a.m. at a depth of 34 kilometers, with the epicenter located about 2 kilometers south, 87 degrees west of Maydolong, Phivolcs said in its first earthquake information bulletin.

The strongest reported shaking was Intensity IV in Borongan City, the provincial capital of Eastern Samar.

Instrumental intensity readings recorded Intensity III in Sulat, Eastern Samar, while Intensity II was recorded in Basey and Villareal in Samar; Can-avid in Eastern Samar; Palapag and San Roque in Northern Samar; and Dulag, Alangalang, Abuyog and Palo in Leyte.

Meanwhile, Intensity I was recorded in Rosario and Mapanas in Northern Samar; Gandara and San Jorge in Samar; and Mahaplag and Hilongos in Leyte.

No damage or other effects were reported due to the tremor. /apl
