Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Monday described as “baseless” and “unfounded” reports that he had presented to President Benigno Aquino his son, Cagayan Representative Jackie Ponce Enrile, as a possible candidate for the Liberal Party.

Speaking at the Kapihan sa Diamond media forum, Enrile told reporters that his alleged  request “is a surprise to me and probably also a surprise to the President.”

Enrile said he was invited last week to Malacañang for a special Cabinet meeting.

“We never talked about political matters,” he said. “In fact, when I arrived in the Palace, the President was not yet there. When the meeting was over, I went to the restroom behind the conference room and when I came back, the President was gone. I was not even able to say goodbye.”  Jeannette I. Andrade
