CEAP reminds senator-judges: Conscience has no color

MANILA, Philippines — The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) called on public officials to uphold the Constitution and act based on an “informed, honest and courageous conscience.”

As it said in a statement before the start of the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday, July 6, “conscience has no color,” pointing out that it does not belong to any political party, ideology or alliance.

“It is neither for the majority nor the minority, but for truth, justice and the common good,” CEAP said as it called on senator-judges to rise above partisan loyalties and personal interests.

For the association of Catholic educational institutions, the conscience of those who will sit as judges in the impeachment court should seek “fidelity to what is just.”

“History remembers not the colors that leaders wore, but the integrity with which they fulfilled their solemn responsibilities,” it said on Facebook.

It also released a prayer entrusting the nation to God, the “source of all truth and justice.”

As stated in the prayer, “may conscience prevail over convenience, and may righteousness triumph over expediency” through decisions guided only by truth, justice and the common good.

Duterte’s trial, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., is expected to span several weeks. /apl
