JBC to comment on Chavez petition Monday

MANILA, Philippines – The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) will file this Monday its comment on former Solicitor General Francisco Chavez’s petition, seeking to stop the search for the next Chief Justice, a member said over Radyo Inquirer 990AM.

Allthough two of its members – Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas Jr. and Senator Francis Escudero – have asked for 10 days to submit their own replies, the rest of the JBC was ready to submit their comment within the day, said lawyer Jose Mejia, who represents the academe in the JBC.

The Supreme Court has given the JBC until July 11 to comment on Chavez’s petition which deemed Tupas and Escudero’s membership with the council “patently unconstitutional”.

Mejia said the JBC was busy preparing for the interviews of the nominees for the Chief Justice post, scheduled to begin on July 24 until July 27.
