WORKER KILLED IN SHIP MISHAP
A 21-YEAR-OLD laborer was killed after he was thrown off from the portside of the wing accommodation of a ship inside the compound of a ship manufacturing company in barangay Buanoy, Balamban town, mid-west Cebu.
Killed on the spot was Randy Agsoy, worker of Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (THI) .
Police said Agsot fell from the portside of the wing accommodation which is about 62 feet from the ground.
Police said Agsoy was with co-workers, Rolly Narciso, 20, and Kenneth Villarosa, 30, past 3 p.m. last Thursday.
While Agsoy was about to perform welding works near the main hole of the wing accommodation, the welding equipment flared then caught fumes, throwing Agsoy to the ground due to the impact.
Police said the three laborers were employed under sub-contractor DMD Contractor.
In a phone interview, SPO3 Arvie Banate of the Balamban police, said Agsoy was unaware that fumes were present in the area because the wing accommodation was newly-painted.
Banate said the fumes need to be vacuumed with an electronic blower first before welding can be made.
Banate said welding should be done after 24 hours of vacuum.
Banate said Agsoy did not see any electronic blower in the area and it was possible that he assumed that the fumes were already vacuumed.
Police said Narciso and Villarosa who was about a meter away were also thrown off but railings prevented them from falling to the ground. The two men were unharmed.
Police said Agsoy suffered second degree burns and broken bones.
Police said THI has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
Banate said the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) conducted a separate investigation about the incident.
Banate said the contractor has been taking care of the needs of Agsoy’s family.
Police said Agsoy’s family has yet to decide if they will file charges against THI./REPORTER RHEA RUTH V. ROSELL
