Gatchalian says banks recognize him as Senate signatory

MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Pro Tempore Win Gatchalian on Wednesday said financial institutions have recognized him as the authorized signatory for Senate financial transactions.

Gatchalian said he signed payroll checks with the Land Bank of the Philippines and authorized the release of salaries and benefits for nearly 2,100 Senate personnel, along with the promotion of eight employees.

“The employees of the Senate serve the nation every day, and it is my responsibility as the Senate’s leader to ensure that they receive their salaries and benefits on time,” Gatchalian said in a press conference on Wednesday.

The development comes amid a continuing leadership dispute in the Senate, with Gatchalian serving as acting Senate president while Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano maintains that he remains the chamber’s duly elected president.

Meanwhile, Gatchalian said he is busy in making sure that the welfare of the employees will not be affected.

He likewise maintained that Senate operations remain functional despite the leadership row.

“What is important is that the Senate continues to operate smoothly and is able to carry out its duties for the people,” Gatchalian added. /das
