MANILA, Philippines—A 24-year-old man who simply stepped outside his house because he could not sleep was hit by a stray bullet Thursday in Manila.

The lone bullet pierced the insomniac’s left forearm before boring through his body.

Ricardo Roxas, of Interior 35 Pilar Street in Tondo, sustained two gunshot wounds in the stomach and in the left arm while he was standing outside his home. A neighbor took Roxas to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

Manila Police District (MPD) Jose Abad Santos station commander Superintendent Roderick Mariano said that the incident happened at around 2 a.m. on Thursday.

Mariano told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that based on Roxas’ statement, a melee between two warring groups broke out near where he was standing outside his house. He then claimed to have heard gunfire coming from one of the two groups and then allegedly felt a bullet pierce his left forearm and go through his gut.

A neighbor who saw him bleeding from his wounds immediately rushed him to the nearest hospital.

Police station investigators were still establishing the identity of the shooter, according to Mariano.
