MANILA, Philippines—About 300,000 dogs are being killed every year in the Philippines to be served as “pulutan”—appetizer for alcoholic beverages, a Radyo Inquirer report said Wednesday.
In the report, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief director Samuel Pagdilao Jr. was quoted as saying that Filipinos ignored warnings that people might contract rabies from eating dog meat.
The CIDG on Monday shut down an illegal slaughter house in San Carlos City in Pangasinan, which was reportedly involved in illegal dog meat trade.
The arrested suspects, Danny Samira and Jansen Tagadua, were slapped with charges of violation of Animal Welfare Act and Anti Rabies Act.
London-based Animal Kingdom Foundation Inc. helped in the operation.
