A 38-year-old member of the Philippine Navy who has been suffering from a nervous breakdown hacked and wounded his wife in barangay Poblacion, Argao town, southern Cebu.
Police said the attack happened a week after the wife was mauled by her husband.
Because of the mauling, John Binghit was prevented by barangay officials from going near his wife Pacita, a teacher of Argao National High School.
The husband stayed in a relative’s house in sitio Suba while the wife stayed in their house.
Around 9 p.m. last Monday, John asked his nephew to tell Pacita to go to his house.
The couple met there and talked.
John stepped out for awhile, then returned with a bolo and hacked his spouse, who was talking to a cousin over the phone.
Some neighbors rushed Pacita to the Isidro Kintanar Memorial Hospital where she was treated for hack wounds in the head and hands. She was later transferred to the South General Hospital in Naga City.
John surrendered to the police after the incident and was taken to the psychiatric ward of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City.
Insp. Alejandro Batobalonos, Argao police chief, said John has been suffering from a nervous breakdown for about five years.
Pacita went to the Women and Children’s Protection Desk of the Argao police last week and complained about her husband’s physical abuse.
She and John’s relatives had planned to bring him to the VSMMC’s psychiatric ward.
Police said the man had complained to neighbors that he suspected his wife was seeing another man and spending their money.
John’s relatives said the allegations were not true and that these were just signs of his instability.
