TD ‘Caloy’ brings rains to Eastern Visayas; hot weather persists in Western Visayas

ILOILO CITY—Tropical Depression Caloy (international name: Hagupit) continued to influence weather conditions across parts of the Visayas on May 11, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

In its 5 p.m. regional weather forecast, Pagasa Visayas said the center of Caloy was estimated at 480 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, as of 3 p.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 55 kph while moving northward at 10 kph.

Pagasa said the trough or extension of the tropical depression would directly affect Eastern Samar, bringing cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms.

The rest of the Visayas, including Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, Antique, Cebu, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Leyte, Samar, and Biliran, will continue to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the easterlies.

Despite rainy conditions in parts of Eastern Visayas, several areas in Western Visayas are still expected to experience warm daytime temperatures reaching up to 36 degrees Celsius, particularly in Iloilo, Guimaras, and Occidental Mindoro on Tuesday.

Pagasa forecast temperatures in Western Visayas to range from 26 to 36 °C, with slight to moderate coastal waters prevailing across the region.

In Eastern Visayas, temperatures are expected to range from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius, with Samar and Biliran likely to experience the warmest conditions despite intermittent rains.

The state weather bureau advised residents, especially those in low-lying and mountainous areas of Eastern Samar, to remain alert for possible flash floods or landslides during heavy thunderstorms.

Light to moderate winds and slight to moderate seas are expected across the Visayas. /mcm
