7th University Run to offer 25-kilometer distance

/ 07:01 AM July 03, 2012

A 25-KILOMETER distance will be included in Cebu Doctors’ University’s 7th University Run slated Aug. 19 at the CDU campus at the Mandaue City Reclamation Area.

Adding more challenge to the longer 25k route, runners will also have to pass through three bridges—the old Mactan Bridge, the Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the Cansaga Bay Bridge in Mandaue City.

Last year, the University Run was dubbed Two Bridge Challenge since its route passed through the old Mactan Bridge and the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.  Its longest distance was 21k aside from the 3k and 10k categories. This year, the race will also have 13k, 6k and 3k distances aside from the 25k.

The race will go head-to-head with another running event on that day, which is the Timex Run.

But Dr. Potenciano “Yong” Larrazabal III, the brain child of the University Run,  said he is not worried about that and is in fact expecting to draw 4,000 runners.

“The University Run has been here for seven years so people have already recognized this running event,” said Larrazabal.  “I have talked to the organizers of the Timex Run and they wanted to move [their run] to another date but all of the Sundays of this year are already booked.”

Larrazabal was present during yesterday’s official launching at the newly built Run For Sight Foundation headquarters inside the CDU Hospital at barangay Capitol Site.

The new Run For Sight headquarters will serve as a mini museum and official registration area for runners.  It will also be used as a function room for launching future running events of the Run For Sight Foundation./CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
