Danger-level heat index lingers in parts of Visayas; some areas hit 45°C

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — Several areas in the Visayas continue to experience dangerous heat index levels, with some locations reaching as high as 45°C, even as slightly lower—but still risky—conditions are expected over the weekend, according to the latest data from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
As of May 1, Dumangas in Iloilo registered one of the highest heat indices in the Visayas at 45°C, placing it under the “danger” category where heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, and heat stroke is possible with prolonged exposure.
Iloilo City also remained under intense heat, peaking at 44°C on April 30 before easing to 41°C on May 1. While forecasts show a slight drop to 39°C on May 2 and May 3, the levels still fall within the “extreme caution” range.
Other parts of Western Visayas recorded elevated readings, with Roxas City, Capiz at around 40°C and several stations across Iloilo province ranging from 37°C to 39°C.
In Eastern Visayas, Tacloban City is expected to reach up to 42°C, entering the “danger” threshold, while Catarman in Northern Samar may hit 41°C, just below the same level. Borongan in Eastern Samar and nearby areas are also projected to experience heat indices close to 40°C.

Central Visayas posted slightly lower but still concerning levels. Panglao, Bohol, may reach 39°C, while Mactan, Cebu, is forecast at 37°C, both under “extreme caution.”
These conditions mirror earlier heat index reports this week that showed persistent high temperatures across the Visayas, largely driven by the easterlies, which continue to bring warm and humid weather to the region.
While some areas are expected to see marginal declines in heat index values in the next two days, PAGASA warned that much of the Visayas will remain within hazardous levels, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Heat index levels of 42°C to 51°C are classified as “danger,” while 33°C to 41°C fall under “extreme caution.”
Authorities have reiterated public health advisories issued in previous days, urging residents to limit outdoor exposure, drink plenty of water, and seek cooler environments when possible.
Local governments in parts of the Visayas, including Iloilo City, have earlier rolled out mitigation measures such as cooling stations and public advisories in response to the continuing heat.
With high heat indices persisting, residents are advised to remain cautious as the region continues to grapple with prolonged hot weather conditions. /cb /atm
