Iloilo City intensifies long-term support for 4Ps families

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — The Iloilo City government is shifting its focus from temporary relief to long-term self-sufficiency by expanding its support systems for beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), particularly for youth who have aged out of the national government’s subsidy program.

In a meeting with 4Ps parent leaders held on Friday, May 1, Mayor Raisa Treñas emphasized the city’s commitment to ensuring that children older than 18, who are no longer eligible for Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) grants, can still pursue their aspirations.

To bridge the gap left by the end of national subsidies, Treñas announced that the city will facilitate the entry of interested students into the Uswag Scholarship Program. For those leaning toward vocational paths, the city is opening doors through the Technical Institute of Iloilo City (TIIC).

“All children interested in proceeding to college will be enrolled in the Uswag Scholarship, while those who wish to take technical courses and training will be admitted to TIIC so they can graduate or acquire skills suited for them,“ Treñas said.

The intervention extends beyond the youth. The mayor also unveiled plans for Sustainable Livelihood Programs (SLP) specifically designed for 4Ps mothers. This initiative includes financial assistance and additional allowances aimed at bolstering small-scale home businesses.

Treñas highlighted that the ultimate goal is to empower families to stand on their own feet rather than relying indefinitely on government aid.

“We are prioritizing sustainable help — not just temporary aid, but opportunities that provide strength to our 4Ps families,“ the mayor added. “When their children finish school and secure decent jobs, that is true progress.“ /cb /atm
