Jay Sonza arrested over cyberlibel case – NBI chief

MANILA, Philippines — Former television and broadcast personality Jay Sonza was arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Thursday evening in Quezon City over a cyberlibel case filed against him for allegedly spreading fake medical records of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed the arrest in a phone interview with the INQUIRER on Thursday evening.

“Just now, a few minutes ago, he was just arrested,” Matibag said in Filipino.

Matibag said the Pasay City Regional Trial Court issued the arrest warrant on Thursday, allowing the NBI to apprehend the former broadcaster.

He added that Sonza is now under the custody of the NBI.

‘We’ll take an action if needed’

Following Sonza’s arrest, his legal counsel, Atty. Mark Tolentino released a statement saying he will go straight to the NBI to “ensure that his rights are fully respected, especially as a senior citizen.”

“We will not let any violation pass. We will monitor every step. We will take action if necessary,” Tolentino said in Filipino.

It was in February when the NBI filed a cyber libel complaint against Sonza and another vlogger, Jeffrey Luces Celiz, or “Ka Eric Celiz,” for the alleged spreading of fake medical records of the President. /jpv
