TACLOBAN CITY — Bishop Nolly Buco of the Diocese of Catarman is urging the public to scale down lavish celebrations and embrace simplicity, aligning the Church with a recent austerity drive by local government leaders amid ongoing national energy emergency.
In a circular dated April 21, 2026, the church leader appealed to priests, church workers, and lay institutions across the diocese to promote “moderation, prudence, and responsible stewardship” in fiestas, sacramental rites, and other parish events.
He warned that increasingly extravagant celebrations risk overshadowing their spiritual purpose and placing undue financial strain on families.
The directive echoes an earlier resolution passed by the 24 mayors of Northern Samar, who agreed to observe austerity measures in response to rising fuel costs and their impact on local economies.
The initiative encourages communities to limit excessive spending and focus on essential needs.
Buco expressed support for the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Northern Samar Chapter, which formalized the call for simpler, more sustainable celebrations through Resolution No. 2026-05.
He described the collaboration between civil and church leaders as a “timely reminder” to prioritize substance over display.
“Increasingly lavish festivities risk overshadowing the deeper spiritual meaning of these occasions,” the bishop said, noting that such practices may pressure communities to conform to unsustainable standards.
He urged church leaders to guide the faithful toward celebrations that remain joyful yet “grounded in humility,” while staying mindful of the economic realities faced by many residents.
The circular, issued from the Chancery Office in Catarman, takes immediate effect across the Diocese of Catarman. /gsg
