MANILA, Philippines — The Magdalo group will push for Sen. Risa Hontiveros to run for president in the 2028 elections, according to former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.

“We’ve scrutinized the prospective candidates,” Trillanes told reporters.

“As of the moment, the person whom we want to push for the presidency is Senator Risa Hontiveros. She has the qualifications, and she really stands for her principles,” he added.

This came after former Vice President and Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo ruled out a run for national office in the 2028 elections.

Robredo, who lost the presidency to now-President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in 2022, said she will instead seek a second term as Naga mayor.

“Of course, if she won’t run for president, the better thing for Mayor Leni to do is to endorse either Senator Bam Aquino or Senator Risa so that the support for her could be transferred to either of them,” Trillanes said in Filipino.

So far, Vice President Sara Duterte is the only one to have formally declared a presidential run.

Trillanes was at the House of Representatives justice committee’s third hearing on the impeachment complaints against Duterte on Wednesday, April 22. /mcm
