LOOK: Strike divides transport workers in Iloilo City

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — Amid a call for strike, some traditional and modernized jeepneys continue to ply their routes in Iloilo City on Tuesday.
The jeepneys drove along Rizal Street and City Proper on Tuesday, April 21, while some transport groups hold a local demonstration to cry “Sobra na! Tama na” pertaining to alleged overpricing of petroleum products in the country.

Those who went on strike gathered under the flyover in General Luna Street, Iloilo City.

The local strike is fueled by a severe global energy crisis as the conflict in the Middle East escalates, with Iran and the United States engaged in a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.
These geopolitical tensions have sent Brent crude prices surging, triggering historic price hikes at local pumps.

While some cooperatives in Iloilo opted not to join the nationwide stoppage to maintain public mobility, drivers remaining on the road expressed mounting frustration over the depletion of their daily earnings due to the runaway costs of fuel. /cb
