Visayas stays under ‘extreme caution’— Pagasa

ILOILO CITY — Heat index levels across the Visayas remain elevated, with most areas still under the “extreme caution” category and some locations nearing “danger” levels, according to the latest monitoring by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In its updated five-day heat index outlook and two-day forecast issued at 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, the weather bureau said Western, Central, and Eastern Visayas continue to experience sustained heat stress, extending conditions observed in recent days.

In Western Visayas (Region VI), readings remain high despite slight fluctuations. Iloilo City posted heat indices ranging from 34°C to 40°C in recent days, with forecasts of 38°C to 39°C through April 20 and 21. Dumangas, Iloilo, previously reached 41°C but is expected to ease to 39°C–40°C, while Roxas City, Capiz, peaked near 40°C before slightly declining to the upper 30s.

Across Negros Island, La Carlota City recorded highs of up to 40°C, but it is forecast to drop slightly to 36°C–37°C. Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, continues to register lower temperatures but still concerning levels of 34°C to 35°C.

In Central Visayas (Region VII), conditions remain steady within the extreme caution range, with Mactan, Cebu, at 34°C to 35°C and Panglao, Bohol, at 35°C to 36°C over the next two days.

Eastern Visayas (Region VIII) shows mixed but still high readings. Tacloban City is forecast at 35°C to 36°C, while Catarman, Northern Samar, may reach 38°C. Borongan, Eastern Samar, which previously hit the “danger” level at 42°C, is expected to remain high at 39°C to 40°C, while Guiuan may again approach 40°C to 41°C.

Pagasa said the persistent heat across the Visayas is consistent with earlier forecasts, with little relief expected as fair weather conditions continue to prevail.

The agency reiterated that heat indices of 33°C to 41°C fall under “extreme caution,” where heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible with prolonged exposure. Temperatures at 42°C and above fall under the “danger” category, where heat stroke becomes likely.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during peak hours, stay hydrated, and wear light clothing. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with medical conditions, are urged to take extra precautions.
