Brian Poe calls for ‘people’s hearing’ on oil crisis, energy reforms

MANILA, Philippines — FPJ Panday Bayanihan party-list Rep. Brian Poe has called for a second hearing under the Super Committee on the Philippine Oil Crisis, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive, participatory process that directly engages the sectors most affected by rising fuel prices and the country’s ongoing energy challenges.

Following the initial hearing, Poe stressed that it is clear more voices must be heard.

“After the hearing, it became evident that there are still many voices we need to listen to,” Poe said. “This is why I am calling for a second hearing — one that truly serves as a people’s hearing, where stakeholders, sectors, and organizations directly affected by rising oil prices and the energy crisis can actively participate.”

The lawmaker underscored that policymaking must not be detached from the lived realities of ordinary Filipinos, particularly those bearing the brunt of volatile fuel prices.

“Policies should never be crafted in isolation from the people’s experience. Those most affected must be given the platform to share their situation, perspectives, and recommendations,” he added.

Poe emphasized that a more inclusive and participatory approach would lead to more effective and equitable solutions.

“Through a more inclusive and participatory process, we can craft solutions that are fair, effective, and truly responsive to the needs of our people,” he said.

The call comes amid growing concern over the country’s energy security, as global oil prices continue to rise and fluctuate. Poe warned that the Philippines is at a critical juncture and must act decisively to strengthen its long-term energy strategy.

“Our energy security is at a critical point,” Poe said. “The continued increase and volatility of global oil prices highlight the urgent need to strengthen our long-term strategy.”

To address the crisis, Poe outlined three key priorities.

First, he called for the accelerated development of strategic petroleum reserves to serve as a buffer against external shocks and ensure a stable supply of fuel.

Second, he stressed the importance of genuine energy diversification, including expanding the use of renewable energy, alternative fuels, and indigenous energy sources to reduce dependence on imported oil.

Third, Poe urged a comprehensive review of Republic Act No. 8479, or the Oil Deregulation Law, to assess whether it continues to serve the best interests of the Filipino people amid persistent price increases.

“While the law was designed to promote competition, we must now ask whether it still effectively protects our people in the face of sustained price volatility,” he said.

Poe concluded by stressing the urgency of the situation, warning that the oil crisis is not a simple issue and requires immediate, decisive action.

“This is not a simple problem. We must act now to protect our economy and safeguard the welfare of our people,” he said. /das
