MANILA, Philippines — Every year on April 1, people around the world take part in April Fools’ Day. It is a day dedicated to jokes, playful tricks, and harmless mischief—or so they say…

Not all pranks are funny, and some can have real consequences. For instance, fake pregnancy announcements can hurt feelings or spread confusion. Hoaxes can damage reputations or cause panic.

REMEMBER: Fake bookings and order cancellations are way below what you can do as “the world’s greatest prankster,” so don’t you dare attempt it. (I mean, in this economy?! Show some heart!)

Likewise, viral “challenges” promoted by brands, like a fake reward for extreme stunts, are also off-limits as they can encourage unsafe behavior.

For instance, Ramil Albano in 2025 tattooed a takoyaki shop’s logo on his forehead after the brand promised a P100,000 reward to anyone who did it.

While the stunt was meant as an April Fools’ joke, Albano saw it as a chance to earn money.

The brand later deleted its post, leaving Albano disappointed but following public clamor, they still paid him, and other brands even gave him additional prizes in sympathy.

The rule of thumb? If it could physically, emotionally, or socially hurt or harm someone, then it’s not a prank, it’s a problem.

How to gauge if a prank is harmless

The best pranks are fun, harmless, and leave everyone laughing. While we won’t list specifics here, think in terms of creativity over shock value.

Pranks that are lighthearted, reversible, and considerate of the setting (whether at home, in the office, or online), are the safest bets.

Before pulling a prank, ask yourself:

  1. Would I laugh if this happened to me?
  2. There isn’t a chance that this will hurt or upset someone, right?
  3. Is this appropriate for the time, place, and people involved?
  4. Can it be easily undone or fixed if it goes wrong?
  5. MOST IMPORTANTLY: As soon as I say, “It’s a prank! Happy April Fools’ Day,” will it leave everyone jealous that they didn’t think of that prank ahead of me?

If the answer is yes to all these checks, then it’s likely a good-spirited prank, and one you can do as the “world’s greatest prankster.” (Yay, you!)

April Fools’ Day is a celebration of creativity, laughter, and shared moments of fun. By focusing on harmless, thoughtful pranks, you can join in the tradition without regrets.

Pranks should leave everyone involved smiling, not stressed.

This April 1, get creative and share some laughs, but mind you, the best pranks are the ones where people can laugh with you, not at you (or any of your prank victims). /mr
