Metro Cebu drainage plan pushed

GOVERNMENT experts in Manila will be asked to make an integrated drainage plan for Metro Cebu to address perennial flooding.

The proposal was endorsed yesterday by the Regional Development Council (RDC) in Central Visayas during its second quarter meeting held in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

The resolution seeking the preparation of a Metro Cebu drainage plan was addressed to the Dept. of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)’s Project Management Office-Flood Control & Sabo Engineering Center in Manila.

Last May, the DPWH 7 in Cebu said it lacked the expertise to make an anti-flooding plan for the metropolis, and suggested raising this instead to the PMO in Manila.

When the flooding problem was discussed in October 2011 by the Metro Cebu Development and Coordinating Board, the body agreed to use individual drainage plans of local government units.

Seven out of 13 citites and municipalites submitted their drainage plans as of April 27.

These are Cebu City, Mandaue City, Danao City, Naga City, Talisay City, municipalities of Cordova and Liloan.

Those that haven’t submitted are Lapu-Lapu, Naga and Carcar cities, and the municipalities of Consolacion, Compostela and San Fernando./Correspondent Jessa J. Agua
