Chinese softshell turtle caught in Apayao

TUGUEGARAO CITY — A baby Chinese softshell turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) was reportedly caught Saturday evening, March 21, in Barangay Imelda, Sta. Marcela, Apayao, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) in Calanasan said Sunday.
The turtle was turned over by Christian Maruquin of Barangay Tamalunog, Flora, Apayao in what DENR officials described as an encouraging sign of growing community awareness and cooperation in wildlife protection.
Dorothy Joy Cayaba, officer-in-charge of DENR-CENRO Calanasan, said the community’s response reflects increasing public support for environmental protection.
“The release of the Cantor’s softshell turtle has received a positive reaction from the community. I am happy,” Cayaba said in an online interview.
She described the young Chinese softshell turtle as having a smooth, leathery shell, olive-brown coloration and a flat, disc-like body.
It also has a long, flexible snout used for breathing while submerged, and webbed limbs that make it a swift swimmer.
Even at an early stage, it feeds on small aquatic organisms, the DENR said.
The agency noted that the Chinese softshell turtle is commonly associated with aquaculture and is considered an introduced species.
DENR-CENRO Calanasan is facilitating the proper assessment and disposition of the animal.
Cayaba said the turnover reflects a positive response to recent conservation efforts, following the release of a Cantor’s giant softshell turtle named “Malaya.”
She has this message to the communities: “Let this serve as an inspiration to everyone. If you encounter wildlife, choose to protect, report and turn them over to the proper authorities. Together, we can make a difference.”
