PNP aims for zero crime on Holy Week

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday allayed fears of a possible uptick in robbery and theft linked to rising fuel prices, saying it is prepared to maintain peace and order under any scenario.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday said it is aiming for zero crime this upcoming Holy Week through closer coordination with barangay officials.

According to PNP chief, Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., police commanders have been directed to work closely with barangay personnel to ensure the full implementation of peace and order plans.

“While we already mobilized a sufficient number of our personnel to secure the Holy Week and the entire summer, we always deem our partners in the barangays as an integral part of our peace and order plan and implementation. Our coordination is strong and working,” Nartatez said, as quoted in a press release.

The PNP said that barangay units will serve as the first line of defense, enhancing police visibility and enabling a quicker response. This year’s Holy Week will be observed from March 29 to April 5.

In early March, the PNP launched its “Ligtas SUMVAC 2026” campaign, which will run from March 29 to May 31, to safeguard citizens during the summer break.

During Holy Week 2025, the PNP recorded 64 drownings, 15 fires, and 14 vehicular accidents. Other incidents monitored included acts of lasciviousness, alarm and scandal, theft, and robbery. /mr
