‘Mt. Kamuning’ replaced with pedestrian-friendly footbridge

MANILA, Philippines — Pedestrians no longer need to scale “Mt. Kamuning,” the towering footbridge near the corner of Edsa and Kamuning Road in Quezon City, with the opening of the new overpass that is just 5.3 meters high, compared to the old one, which is 9 meters tall.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday led the inspection of the new Kamuning footbridge with first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, their son Vinny, as well as Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez and Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon.

“The old one is not very good at all. You could even feel the steps shaking when [trains] passed under it. The new footbridge is way better,” Marcos told reporters.

Equipped with elevators

“So now, the flight of stairs that commuters have to climb is lower, and there is already an elevator for those who cannot use the stairs. We also installed a wheelchair lift for people using wheelchairs, and we even provided wheelchairs to make the commuting experience easier,” he added.

Aside from the new and improved footbridge, which costs P54.7 million, the president also inspected the newly renovated Edsa busway station, which costs P32.6 million.

The waiting sheds at the station were replaced, while its wayfinding signage, transit map, and fare matrix were updated. Dedicated security pods, station personnel outposts, and tactile tiles to assist visually impaired passengers were also installed.

Better accessibility

“So far, I’m happy to see that we can actually make a better structure … It is not that difficult, as long as we are determined to improve the commuting experience of Filipinos,” Marcos said.

“Mt. Kamuning will no longer be there. We will remove Mt. Kamuning, so this new structure will be used instead,” he said.

The new footbridge provides better accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and other commuters of the Edsa busway and Metro Rail Transit 3.

“Commuting is already difficult, long, and hot. So I said that we should at least improve the everyday condition our fellow citizens go through just to get to work and return home,” Marcos said.

In June, he ordered that the original footbridge be replaced with a safer, more commuter-friendly structure compliant with universal accessibility standards.

Work on the new footbridge started in October 2025 and was completed last month. /mcm
