DepEd: Kanlaon’s latest eruption affects 233,000 learners

ILOILO CITY — More than 233,000 learners have been affected by class suspensions as Mt. Kanlaon showed signs of increased activity with recent episodes of moderate eruption, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).
In its situation report as of 5 p.m. on Feb. 27, DepEd said 233,528 learners and 10,076 personnel in 465 public schools across six divisions in the Negros Island Region (NIR) were affected by the ongoing volcanic activity.

Based on monitoring by the DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DepEd-DRRMS), Kanlaon Volcano remains under alert level 2 following increased unrest.
On Feb. 26, a brief moderately explosive eruption and a 71-minute ash emission generated a plume reaching about 2,500 meters high and drifting southwest.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) also recorded 14 volcanic earthquakes, sulfur dioxide emissions averaging 194 tons per day, and signs of edifice inflation, indicating sustained internal volcanic activity.
Entry into the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone remains strictly prohibited due to the risk of sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions. Areas in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental may be affected.
DepEd said that 465 schools have suspended in-person classes and shifted to the Flexible Learning Program (FLP) to ensure continuity of education. As of reporting time, no schools are being used as evacuation centers.
School divisions were directed to coordinate closely with local DRRM offices, activate School DRRM teams, implement contingency plans, secure learning materials and records, and preposition emergency supplies and essential resources.
