INQUIRER.net recognized by PCG for WPS coverage

MANILA, Philippines — The INQUIRER.net has been recognized by the Philippine Coast Guard – West Philippine Sea Transparency Group (PCG-WPSTG) for its vital role in covering matters in the WPS. 

The award was presented during the celebration of the PCG-WPSTG’s second founding anniversary on Thursday. The recognition was personally received by its Editor-in-Chief, Abelardo Ulanday. 

In recognizing the INQUIRER.net as one of its local media partners, the PCG-WPSTG said that through its “responsible reporting, sustained coverage, and commitment to factual storytelling, you have amplified public understanding, upheld transparency, and strengthened informed discourse in the West Philippine Sea.”

Ulanday expressed gratitude to the PCG-WPSTG for recognizing its efforts in producing reliable and transparent reports on what is happening in the WPS. 

“This recognition will further inspire us to do more stories on this issue, hoping it will help enlighten the Filipino leaders and people and guide them on what right and proper steps to take to protect our sovereignty and ensure our security,” Ulanday said in a statement.

The PCG-WPSTG was officially institutionalized in January 2024, with Commodore Jay Tarriela designated as its commander. It aims to provide maritime domain awareness, research, and operations  in the WPS.

National Security Council chief Eduardo Año said that the transparency group has come a long way two years since it was established.

“Our fellow citizens have become enlightened; they have become aware. We have seen that more than 90% of our countrymen support the policies of our President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on how we are addressing the challenges,” Año said in an interview. /mr
