Love runs deep: 550 runners tackle Bukidnon trails for dialysis patients

LANTAPAN, Bukidnon — While many celebrated Valentine’s Day with flowers and gifts, more than 550 runners chose to spend Saturday morning on rugged mountain trails, turning love into action for patients battling kidney diseases.

Residents and visitors joined the Lantapan Kidney Trail Run in this vegetable capital of Lantapan, Bukidnon.

The activity is an off-road charity event aimed at raising funds and awareness for 58 dialysis patients who are struggling with treatment costs.

The race flagged off at 4:30 a.m. for the 21-kilometer category, followed by the 10-km and 5-km runs at 6 a.m., drawing runners, enthusiasts, first-timers and local officials together.

Florence Gomonan, a nurse and event facilitator, said many dialysis patients face continuous huge financial hardships despite government assistance.

“We organized this trail run to give them additional support and let them feel that they are not alone,” she said.

Mayor Ricky James Balansag said the activity reflects the deeper meaning of Valentine’s Day.

“This shows that love goes beyond romance. It means helping those who need us most,” he said.

First-time participant, Atty. Evan John Talaver, described the race as both challenging and meaningful, as runners navigated dirt paths, mud and rocky terrain.

“Trail running connects you with nature. It’s not just about speed but about the experience and purpose,” he said.

Local and barangay officials, private groups and health workers also supported the event. 

Vice Mayor Ernie Devivar and municipal health officer Josefa Arlita Alsula promoted healthy lifestyles and medical awareness during the gathering.

Organizers noted that the run also coincided with Philippine Heart Month, observed every February to highlight the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

For participants, the message was simple – in Lantapan, Valentine’s Day means running, not just for fitness, but for compassion. /apl
