DSWD releases P25M for shelter of calamity victims

SOME 2,883 families in Negros Oriental were scheduled to receive their Emergency Shelter Assistance (ESA) funds worth P15,940,000 from the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas (DSWD-7) at the Provincial Convention Center in Dumaguete City and Tanjay City Hall last Thursday.

On the same occasion, another 134 families were also expected to receive their P9,380,000 Core Shelter Assistance  Project (CSAP) funds to construct their brand new houses in the towns of Siaton and Bacong in Negros Oriental.

DSWD-7 Regional Director Ma. Evelyn Macapobre confirmed the distribution of P25,320,000 worth of Emergency Shelter Assistance and Core Shelter Assistance  funds  to address the shelter needs and rehabilitate damaged houses  of the families affected by typhoon “Sendong,” which hit at least ten towns in the province, namely, Siaton, Sibulan, Bacong, Valencia, San Jose, Amlan, Pamplona, Mabinay, Dumaguete City and Tanjay  City.

Families with partially damaged houses received P5,000 ESA funds each, while those with totally damaged dwellings but were not willing to be relocated got P10,000.

Meanwhile, beneficiaries of the core shelter project whose houses were totally damaged by the calamity will be moved to their new relocation site and be given P70,000 each to construct their own core shelter unit in Siaton and Bacong.

The other families who will be re-building their houses in their  own lot in cluster of five families  received P50,000.

Macapobre said the LGUs concerned must comply with all the requirements especially on the availability of a lot where the core shelter houses will be constructed as their counterpart. Other than the amount intended to purchase lot,  LGUs will also spend for the survey and site development.
